Tour day

The ticket issue to Urumqui, wakes me up very early. I get to the train station as soon as I can and the better I can get is hard seat for a trip that takes 36 hours, 3 days and 2 loooong nights. I prefer not to think about the pain. I rush to the hostel to book the famous “eastern tour” which includes, among others, the visit of the discovery of 20th century, as the book guide claims (definitely the authors haven’t heard about Machu Picchu!): The Terracotta Warriors.
There is no point in describing what I see during the visits of ruins, museums and tombs, but maybe a little bit of history learnt under the visits could be more interesting. “Did you know that…” after the victory of Japan in the Sino-Japanese war, the north of China (Manchuria) was under Japanese control. The dethroned ruler, Zhang Xueliang, joined the communists to fight them, after realizing the promises of Chiang Kaishek to kick them out were empty. But who is this Chiang Kaishek? He was one more military leader, a little bit more influent than the others. He tried to stop communism in China in 1928, maybe to proclaim himself the new chairman, emperor or even found a new dinasty. And I was in the house (with the bullets in the wall encircled) where he was captured by Zhang to force him to join his troops against the Japanese! He fled to Taiwan instead. End of the history lecture.
After spending about 10 hours with other tourists, unless you have serious social relationship problems, you definitely make new “friends”. At night, a Colombian girl and 4 Englishmen (yes, the place is infected by them) and I go to the big Pagoda water show. A nice water jet show. The jets are synchronized with classic music, an amazing view of water going up and down, with different amplitudes and frequencies, with multicolor lights flashing on them. The surface is as big as a football field and if you’re not scare to get wet, you can even run between them. I drink my second beer in 3 months of “captivity” in this world tour.
